Tallahassee, Florida. Land of sunshine, palm trees, and… snow?
That’s right, folks. On January 21-22, 2025, the impossible happened. A winter storm of epic proportions dumped a rare 2-3 inches of snow on our unsuspecting city, turning our tropical paradise into a winter wonderland. For many lifelong Floridians, this was a first – ice-covered roads, power outages, and a whole lot of “what do we do now?” moments.
Even days later, the remnants of this unexpected blizzard lingered on rooftops and in shady corners. But the most surprising consequence of this icy invasion? Collapsing pool cages.
Imagine this: You’re nestled inside your cozy home, the wind howling outside, when suddenly a deafening crash jolts you awake. You rush out to find your once sturdy pool enclosure crumpled under the weight of the snow and ice, twisted metal a testament to the storm’s power. This scene played out across Tallahassee, leaving homeowners bewildered and facing unexpected repairs.
One of our pressure washing clients in the Summerbrooke neighborhood experienced this firsthand. Their pool cage, unable to withstand the unusual burden, gave way under the icy onslaught. Thankfully, their insurance company responded quickly, deeming the damage covered (minus the deductible, of course). And with a bit of luck, they were able to schedule a speedy rebuild with a local contractor.
This unexpected consequence of the snowstorm highlights the unique challenges faced by a region unaccustomed to such weather. Who would have thought that pool cages, designed to withstand the Florida sun and occasional hurricane, would become casualties of a snowstorm? It’s a reminder that Mother Nature always has a few surprises up her sleeve, even in the Sunshine State.
